How To Write Stunning Twists edition by Brandilyn Collins Reference eBooks
This little article is about a topic not even mentioned in the book: subtext. Surprise, suspense and twists are technically all aspects of subtext, and Brandilyn is an acknowledged master of the technique. I'm an agent, multi published author and a a new manuscript review editor and I can't for the life of me understand the review criticisms of this little article?? Yes it is short. Yes, it costs a buck. Yes it has a link both to Collins outstanding point of view book Getting Into Character: Seven Secrets A Novelist Can Learn From Actors as well as bonus material promoting Brandi's Sidetracked novel. SO WHAT? The issue is: is this WORTH the buck?Absolutely yes! Have you ever read the famous, classic Christmas short story where a poor husband and wife can't afford gifts, so husband pawns his expensive watch to buy a beautiful hair clip, only to find wife had her hair cut off to afford a band for the watch? HOW did the author keep you from guessing the twist? Brandi explains the details. OK, didn't read it, how about Bruce Willis really being dead in The Sixth Sense? The RED clues throughout the movie, the hints but not dishonest details of the wife's "affair." (Remember the rock through the window?). Brand covers HOW you lead/mislead without violating POV or narrative honesty!
This is a subtle and nuanced article, well worth a read, as is Collins novelists/actors book above. The "trick" in the article is to list your assumptions then flip some of them over. If you're really crass and believe the negative reviews, there, you have the punch line. Or DO you? You'll have to read to find out, but the answer is yes and no, yes it is the meat of the article, no, it's not the iceberg, only the 1/8 tip of it as Hemingway would say! Enjoy, highly recommended for novice and seasoned authors.

How To Write Stunning Twists edition by Brandilyn Collins Reference eBooks Reviews
I didn't mind that the author had me read the first chapter of one of her novels (She's a excellent author), but I expected the book to continue to tell me how to develop twists for my own novels. It. didn't. Continue. From my perspective, this 'how to' book was a mere trick to get me to read her latest. Her RULE 1, . . ."you're not allowed to cheat the reader." She cheated me, so, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
Ms. Collins has presented aspiring authors a gem to add to their writing toolkits. I believe good twist in a novel makes the difference between the book and author I remember, and a book that I walk away from with a vague sense that the story could have been better crafted. Well worth the purchase price, this article could make it tough to read my next few book choices, I'll be busy trying to find the premise for the twist!
This is a very, very short book. It does provide a worthwhile insight into writing a twist into a story, but the whole thing is probably less than a blog post. I don't feel cheated at the cost, but if the price were any higher I would have.
This is an article, not a book. Even as an article, it lacks depth and substantive examples. The author adds the first chapter of her latest novel and suggests using it as an exercise to identify unconscious assumptions--which is her main thesis for how to create twists, by turning those assumptions on their head. There, I just told you the entire premise. Collins doesn't add much to that. Even at 99 cents, I felt cheated.
Very concise and to the point, but a practical approach to coming up with interesting twists for a story. Nothing particularly earth-shattering really. Once you see the approach, it's almost common-sense...which makes it easy to remember and implement in practice.
Very little info then a web link then a couple of pages out of another book. I don't pay a dollar for a point usually.
While the small idea presented in this pamphlet is helpful, it certainly isn't enough for a book, and it's not particularly well developed. There isn't any proper method here. There's one sketchy idea, that isn't really new, and a couple of weak examples. I could probably sum up everything this "book" has to say in three paragraphs, or maybe only two.
While it's not expensive, there's barely enough material to justify a chapter, and if it was a chapter in another book, it probably wouldn't be one of the better ones. There's enough here for a single blog post. If I got this "advice" for free, I'd call it value for money, but it certainly isn't worth paying for. In short, don't bother.
